“Normcore” is the newest zeitgeist fashion trend that has set all the hipsters to head-scratching – probably because no one really seems to know what it means.

According to New York-based journalist Fiona Duncan, normcore is “self-aware, stylised blandness”. In other words, it means aggressively dressing to fit in.

Remarkable because it strives to be as unremarkable as possible, normcore is the blank slate of fashion hitherto occupied by middle-aged men; think Seinfeld without the jazzy ties or your dad in his Sunday jeans. And here we were, thinking that Dublin's newest early-adopter trend was the monocle ("appearing in parts of south Dublin," as the New York Times put it last month. "Nowhere in the vicinity," replied the occupants of south Dublin).

Channel your normcore needs by wearing all your classic wardrobe staples at once: sensible grey thermals with basic Levis, New Balance trainers and baggy black jumpers. It’s just that easy.
