These utilitarian, egalitarian bits of kit are for everyone, and should be priced accordingly

There's something very modern about the mussed-up high/low aesthetic: think a perfect, sleek blow-dry and last night's come-to-bed eyeliner, or a tailored shift dress with a pair of battered Chuck Taylors. The freshest example of the ongoing conversation between high and low is the one-two punch of a smart outfit paired with a slightly battered backpack.

Between students and urban travellers, the backpack has been much maligned as a staple in the casual wardrobe. However, it is deceptively versatile. Designers such as Alexander Wang are remaking backpacks in lush leathers, but at heart these are utilitarian, egalitarian bits of kit. The backpack is for everyone, and should be priced accordingly. Mi Pac rucksacks cost from €25, depending on finish. We like this faux-python number. Lazy Oaf's googly eye backpack is quirky and fun, while this River Island number is a slightly more serious proposition.
