Cycling does not need to cramp your style

Deirdre McQuillan

Fiona Wall, nurse and her daughter Juliana, schoolgirl (Duchess Leaf Green Ladies and Dawes Little Duchess).

“I got my first bicycle with my strawberry money”, says Fiona. “I used to pick strawberries in Wexford and used to save up and buy bicycles. My husband does 100k at the weekend and last year we spent three days in New York and cycled all around Brooklyn, over the bridge and beyond and it was our favourite holiday! My work takes me all over the country, so I only cycle at weekends usually in skinny jeans,

Converse and layers”.

Nicolas Toppo, 19, student (Dawes Trek)

“I’m studying business in the Dublin Business School and cycle every day using Dublin bikes. I love cycling around Dublin more than Paris (where I live) because the traffic in Paris is so bad. I usually wear jeans and a jacket rather than track suits and I use a shoulder bag rather than a backpack. I came to Dublin because my mother is Irish and we have family here.”

Denim shirt 100, jacket 210, both Scotch and Soda, red jeans 80 Monkee jeans, all BT2; backpack 64 Shoreleave, Urban Outfitters.

“I got my own bicycle from Rothar last year which my mother (who is from Argentina) calls Monona which is Buenos Aires slang for something beautiful or a beautiful woman. I work as a barista, coffee specialist in Clements & Pekoe and cycle around Dublin a lot usually in Adidas runners, black H & M trousers, vintage shirt, woolly hat and a Peter Storm hiking jacket. As an actor I am involved in a film making collective called The Factory in Barrow Street and I cycle down from Manor Street in Stoneybatter where I live after breakfast in Third Space in Smithfield Square and straight down the quays to Barrow Street.”

Lauren Farrell, actor (Dawes Little Duchess 24w)

“I’ve been living in New York for the past four years where everybody cycles. I love cycling particularly around Carrick on Shannon where I’m from which is so scenic and I think Dublin Bikes has really changed the lifestyle of the Irish. I usually wear comfortable clothes like jeans and a jacket with Converse. I’m just starting rehearsals for a new adaptation of Portrait of an Artist (in which I play Stephen Dedalus) by Jimmy Fay for the New Theatre in June as part of the Joyce Festival.”

“I live in Phibsboro and teach in Newpark Music Centre and I’m also a chorister in Christchurch Cathedral. I cycle to the Dart and bring my bike on the Dart to Blackrock and back to work. I don’t let the fact that I am cycling change what I want to wear, so I often wear pencil skirts with high boots or stilettoes. I always wear a Barbour jacket and sling a high vis over it.”

Michael Wall, retired, 75 (Ambassador 7 Gents)

“I got a gift of a bicycle from my daughter ten years ago for Christmas and I love cycling around Connemara – Dublin is too dangerous” says Michael who retired from Bord na Mona twenty years ago and was one of the founders of the Irish Charity Shops Association in 1998. He laments the fact that bicycles can’t be taken on Irish trains “bad from the tourist point of view - you can bring a bike on a plane but not on a train.”

Florence Ordesh, actor (Cambridge Mixte Ladies)

“I grew up in Co Meath and used to cycle to school every day so I’m used to cycling. I got a bike for my birthday recently and as I live in Harold’s Cross I cycle everywhere around the city centre to auditions and rehearsals. I’m currently appearing in a pilot episode of a US sitcom style comedy Music Maker which is now online and also in a music video for Walking on Cars’ debut single Catch Me If You Can. I tend to wear skirts, jeans with ankle or high boots when I’m on the bike.”
