Disco’s halcyon days are well documented and soundtracked by a range of hits and stars but there was more to disco’s boogie than those mainstream fixtures.
The latest Soul Jazz compilation heads for those less travelled disco roads to unearth a selection of independent releases from 1978 to 1982. Compiler Disco Patrick has put together a heavyweight selection and it’s augmented by authoritative sleeve notes from Stuart Baker.
What’s interesting is how disco began to take on funk, jazz and soul elements in later years to create boogie and pave the way for house’s more electronic textures in turn.
