Deutsche Grammophon has pulled out all the stops for Anne-Sophie Mutter's first recording of Dvorák's Violin Concerto. There's a CD (479 1060) that also includes the Romance, Op 11, the Mazurek, Op 49, and, with piano, the evergreen Humoresque, as well as a deluxe edition adding a DVD of live performances of the Concerto and Romance. The wait (Mutter turned 50 in June) is understandable, given that the concerto's secrets have eluded many a great interpreter. Her luscious tone and fondness for extremes will, I'm sure, delight her legions of fans. But, except in the Finale, the price of Mutter's tendency to dwell in the moment is a weakening of momentum, which causes the work to sound bitty, in spite of the character of her playing. url.ie/57as
