Chance the Rapper’s new album continues hip-hop’s strong run.
Chancelor Bennett's releases to date such as Acid Rap and collaborations with Kanye West, Lil B and Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment indicated that the Chicago rapper knew his onions, but Coloring Book pushes him right into the centre of the action.
Ambitious, compelling, joyful and audacious, it’s an album by a rapper laying down his bona-fides, digging into the roots and coming up with many reasons to be cheerful.
There are odes to growing up in a tough town (Summer Friends), highlife goofing (the Kaytranada- produced All Night), declarations of faith (Blessings and All We Got) and plenty of spots with outsider guests like Young Thug, Lil Yachty, Anderson, Paak, Raury and others.
Throughout it all, Bennett keeps the line. This, after all, is his turn to shine.
