Two men aged in their 50s and 60s have been arrested following a “significant seizure” of €5 million worth of cocaine in Co Kildare.

About 72kg of cocaine was seized after gardaí attached to the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau stopped and searched a vehicle and a residential property in the Allenwood area of Co Kildare.

Following the search operation on Tuesday afternoon, the two men were arrested on suspicion of facilitating and enhancing drug distribution activities for an organised crime group.

They are currently detained at a Garda station in Kildare, pursuant to the provisions of Section 50 of Criminal Justice Act.

A Garda spokesperson said investigations are ongoing.

Assistant commissioner Angela Willis of the Organised and Serious Crime division described the operation as “another significant seizure of cocaine destined for the Irish market”.

“An Garda Síochána and our law enforcement partners are committed to targeting those engaged in drug-related organised crime that leads to harm, intimidation and violence in our communities nationwide,” she said.

The seizure and arrests were carried out under Operation Tara, the focus of which is “to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking networks, at all levels.”
