18,000 courses

The online learning marketplace currently has more than 10,000 instructors teaching 18,000 courses on a range of topics-everything from yoga to photography to Microsoft Excel to Apple's Swift programming language.

Founded by Gagan Biyani, Eren Bali and Oktay Caglar in 2010, Udemy has raised a total of $48 million in venture capital and is headquartered in San Francisco, California.

Earlier this year it completed a $32 million Series C funding in a round led by Norwest Venture Partners (NVP).

At the time, Udemy chief executive Dennis Yang said the funding would be used to expand the firm’s international reach by having physical operations in markets outside the US.

In 2011 in raised $3 million from investors including Groupon co-founders Eric Lefkofsky and Brad Keywell.

The company has doubled its staff headcount in size over the past year.

Mr Yang said the online learning marketplace taps into the knowledge of experts everywhere to close the skills gap.

“Now, individuals everywhere can connect with the skills they need anytime to keep pace in a global economy”.

In 2013, the site launched Udemy for Organisations to help companies manage, develop and grow their teams. Its corporate customers include Oracle, Universal and Pepsico.
