Almost a year after the Eircode system was introduced, Autoaddress has released an app to help people locate an address's postcode.

The app, which is available free of charge for Apple and Android, allows users to find the codes and share address locations with others.

The company is promoting the app as a solution for delivery drivers, salespeople and other commercial users to help locate properties and store contact information for addresses. They can then use third-party apps such as Google or Apple Maps to get door-to-door directions.

Autoaddress is a supplier for Eircode, which was the subject of controversy when it was launched in July last year.

Unconnected codes

The project, which cost €38 million to implement, was described by some critics as not fit for purpose, with problems predicted due to the choice to randomly generate the second part of each code. That means neighbouring properties have unconnected codes and are more difficult to predict.

The ambulance service only began using the codes this year, after its systems were overhauled.
