Facebook to review its moderation procedures

Facebook has committed to review its online moderation procedures after several advertisers, including Nationwide Building Society and Nissan, pulled ads following concerns over offensive content.

The social networking site admitted that “it has become clear that our systems to identify and remove hate speech have failed to work as effectively as we would like, particularly around issues of gender-based hate”.

Facebook said it would “review and update the guidelines that our user operations team uses to evaluate reports of violations of our community standards around hate speech”. The group would also “solicit feedback” from legal experts and from women’s rights campaigners “to ensure that these guidelines reflect best practices”.

In recent days, women’s rights campaigners have highlighted the publication on Facebook of misogynistic content.
