How does an expat differ from an immigrant?

Reason is similar to distinction between ‘undocumented Irish’ and ‘illegal immigrants’

Sir, - Reading Paul Delaney’s letter (Letters, February 16th), in which he queries the reason for a discrepancy between “undocumented Irish” and “illegal immigrants”, I’m reminded of a similar comparison. The use of “expat” versus “immigrant”.

I think a similar reason for the two discrepancies exists. One group is associated with Caucasians thinking themselves as better or exceptional compared to other immigrants (legal or otherwise). Yours, etc,
