Sir, - While Spurs and Northern Ireland captain Danny Blanchflower took umbrage at Eamonn Andrews’s surprise request to be a guest on This is Your Life, I suspect he would have been equally upset at the suggestion that he was a central defender (Frank McNally, An Irishman’s Diary, February 12th).
Blanchflower was, in fact, a creative wing half, or midfielder in today’s parlance. Danny’s younger brother, Jackie, a more versatile player, did, however, play as a central defender for Manchester United as well as a forward and even a substitute goalkeeper in the 1957 cup final. Jackie’s career came to a premature end with the injuries suffered in the Manchester United plane crash at Munich in 1958. - Yours, etc,
KEVIN O’SULLIVAN,
