Sir, – If the application to build a ballroom in Doonbeg (“Ballroom for Trump”, Home News, December 29th) has been inspired by the speed and impunity with which the US president has levelled the East Wing to make way for a similar project, Trump will be sorely disappointed.
Ireland’s arcane and – to use the by now compulsory adjective – byzantine planning system may force even Trump to move at a snail’s pace (not least because the protected narrow-mouthed whorl snail lives nearby).
With any luck, the outcome of Trump’s planning application to Clare County Council will allow us to finally resolve that well-known paradox: what happens when the unstoppable force meets the immovable object? – Yours, etc,
