The budget: `Do better please. Ask the important questions’

Where was the scrutiny on measures like VAT reductions to boost housing delivery?

Sir, – The most disappointing thing about Tuesday’s budget was not the spending increases, nor the tax changes, but the media’s woeful coverage.

The Government’s role should be to create the conditions for prosperity and yet with the various “how much did you get” segments, the media’s coverage did not challenge whether this goal was being met but rather pandered to the capricious whims of a short-sighted public who do nothing more than put their hands out and ask for more.

Where were the questions on measures to foster entrepreneurship and wean ourselves off our vulnerable multinational tax receipts?

Where was the scrutiny on the effectiveness of measures like VAT reductions to boost housing delivery?

Given ever-increasing global geopolitical tensions, did no journalist think to outline and question and challenge the Government’s plan for increased defence spending?

Do better please. Ask the important questions. – Yours, etc,

DONAL MURPHY,
