Sir, – I couldn’t agree more with Céire Sadlier that Ireland isn’t a kip (“Don’t call Ireland a kip: I get defensive when people who have moved away scoff about it,” October 1st).

It’s not perfect, but compared to most countries it is a great place to live in.

Over the years, when I have heard or read that ill-informed comment, I have challenged the relevant individual to list five countries that are better than Ireland.

I have also inquired as to why they haven’t gone to live in one of them. I have never received a coherent response to my questions. I wonder why? – Yours, etc,
