A woman narrowly escaped serious injury today when she was struck by a falling bus shelter.

A woman narrowly escaped serious injury today when she was struck by a falling bus shelter.

The accident occurred at about 2.30pm, when a Dublin Bus tour bus crashed into a bus stop on Cathal Brugha Street, causing it to topple and strike the woman.

She suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Mater Hospital. A spokesman for Dublin Bus said the woman was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The driver of the bus was also taken to hospital suffering from shock. Dublin Bus has opened an internal investigation to establish the cause of the accident.

Last year five people were killed when a Dublin bus ploughed into a crowded pavement on Wellington Quay.

In April, the High Court heard a case against Dublin Bus brought by a couple relating to an accident that took place in May 2000. The couple were struck by a bus that mounted the footpath after the driver blacked out behind the wheel.
