A woman has been released on bail after she was charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of her husband on New Year's Eve.

Dilorom Sulaymanov (35), a mother of two, appeared at Cork District Court yesterday where she was charged with assault causing serious harm to Abduazim Sulaymanov at their home at Pinewood, Ballinlough Road, Cork on December 31st.

Mr Sulaymanov (39) died at Cork University Hospital last Saturday morning after being brought there after suffering a stab wound to the upper body.

Det Sgt Declan O'Sullivan yesterday gave evidence of arresting Ms Sulaymanov at 8.30am on Sunday and bringing her to the Bridewell Garda station where he charged her with assault causing serious harm to her husband.

Det Sgt O'Sullivan said Ms Sulaymanov replied: "I accept the charge but I was defending my children, my mother and myself."

He said gardaí had no objection to Ms Sulaymanov being released on bail and she had already lodged €2,000 as a surety. Her solicitor Eddie Burke applied for free legal aid, saying his client was from Uzbekistan and had two children.

She was not working and was on disability allowance as she was suffering from post-traumatic stress.

Judge Uinsionn Mac Gruairc granted Ms Sulaymanov free legal aid and remanded her on her own bail of €2,000 to appear again at Cork District Court on January 24th.

He also made it a condition of her bail that she sign on daily at Anglesea Street Garda station and that she surrender her travel documents to gardaí.
