Today is the final day of the ASTI ballot in which members of the union vote on accepting Labour Court proposals aimed at breaking the current dispute over pay and teacher status.

The ballot also asks if ASTI members wish the ban on examination work to be reinstated.

Counting begins on Wednesday and the results are expected on Friday.

In what was considered to be a gauge of the sentiment within the union delegates at the ASTI conference in Galway a fortnight ago overwhelmingly voted against the proposals by 312 to 96 with nine abstentions.

The conference recommendations will only take effect if endorsed by the union’s the 17,000-strong membership.

The secondary teachers have been seeking a 30 per cent pay rise.
