Vodafone Ireland chief executive Amanda Nelson is to step down from her position with the Irish telecoms company after less than three years in the role.
Ms Nelson’s departure was announced to staff internally on Monday. She is set to leave in May, with Vodafone Italy’s current interim chief executive Sabrina Casalta to take over as head of Vodafone Ireland.
Ms Casalta was chief financial officer of Vodafone Italy until November last year, when she was appointed as the interim boss of the Italian network to cover the period until its €8 billion sale to Swisscom was complete. That transaction went through in January.
She has held a number of roles in the company, including head of strategy, and chief of Vodafone’s business commercial operations. Before joining Vodafone Italy, Ms Casalta worked as a consultant with PwC and the Boston Consulting Group.
Vodafone said Ms Nelson’s departure was part of “planned leadership transition.” It is not known what Ms Nelson’s next move will be once her tenure ends at Vodafone Ireland.
“During this period, she will work closely with the incoming CEO, Sabrina Casalta from Vodafone Italy, to ensure a smooth and seamless handover of responsibilities,” Vodafone said in a statement.
“This leadership transition is part of the Vodafone Group’s succession planning and reflects our standard practice of periodically introducing new leadership.”
Ms Nelson has worked with Vodafone for more than 25 years in a number of roles, beginning her career with the company in Asia in 1998.
She subsequently moved to Europe to lead operations in the Netherlands, Malta and Hungary before stepping into the Irish role vacated in September 2022 by current Meta Ireland head Anne O’Leary, who led the network for nine years.
Ms Nelson has also overseen significant innovation throughout her career with the telecoms giant, leading digital change in Hungary, particularly during the pandemic in the education and healthcare sector.
