Verona Murphy is the first female Ceann Comhairle and now after just months into that role, the first to face a vote of no confidence.

Her appointment to the prestigious position was controversial, seen as part of what the Opposition terms a “gubby deal” between Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Michael Lowry to form the Government.

The no-confidence vote follows on from a tumultuous week in the Dáil where her impartially and ability to do the job have been called into question.

She has defended her performance and made it clear that she has no intention of stepping down.
