Covid in the air

Sir, – Windows are being closed on a regular basis in buses, trains and trams, and doors and windows have been closed in healthcare settings that I have used. I have had waiters telling me how brave I am to sit outside despite Ireland having a mild temperate climate, and people tell me continually when I say that I am meeting friends outside, that it will be miserable and cold.

Noses are still on display in shops, pharmacies and buses, and bare-faced baristas have offered me coffee. In one university setting, I have met unmasked staff on corridors and in the toilets.

I am not sure if all of this due to blind faith in vaccines, optimism bias or just simple denial. Covid is spread by both droplet and aerosol but this knowledge needs to be disseminated more widely, rather than being hinted at obliquely.

Yours, etc,
