Pick up fresh local produce or hot food with many markets located in beautiful settings

Many of our food markets remained open when little else was happening, offering an outlet for local producers and a rare chance for many of us to enjoy a small, indulgent pleasure to relieve the tedium of lockdown. And now, with longer, warmer days, they are the ideal place to head to meet up with friends outdoors.

So, this list is a mix of food markets, big and small, where you can pick up fresh local produce and, in some cases, hot food, with many of them located in beautiful parks and the grounds of stately homes, which are perfect for a picnic and a great day out.

The farmers' market here has been running for two years and, as well as their own produce, includes stalls with bread, pastries, meats and fish.

Brighton Square Market
Brighton Square, Terenure, Dublin 6W; Thursday 8am-3pm
It may seem like Terenure is "on the up", with the arrival of Niall Sabongi's Saltwater Grocery and now Lotts & Co, but one of the sweetest markets, with just two stalls at Brighton Square, has been trading away quietly for 20 years. John Bates pulls up in his Fish from the Quay van, selling wild fish from Kilmore Quay, and Philip Coffey has an impressive selection of organic fruit and vegetables, cheese, eggs and sourdough.
