Irish Times reporter Ronan McGreevy and his family arrived on the Greek island of Corfu for their annual holiday last Thursday, just before the outbreak of wildfires that have devastated local communities, incinerated wildlife and discommoded thousands of tourists.
Fires on Corfu and Rhodes are raging as an extreme heatwave, that experts say is linked to climate change, impacts all of southern Europe.
Ronan tells In the News about watching the fires from the balcony of his holiday apartment, listening out for updates and warnings from the authorities and sweltering in the 40 degree heat. It’s not a holiday many could be envious of.
But will the increasing frequency of extreme events linked to climate change put tourists off Mediterranean destinations like Greece in the long run?
