The sounds of spring

Sir, – Nowadays, at this time of year, rather than the voice of the turtle being heard in the land, it’s more likely to be the lawnmower (baritone), the strimmer (alto), or that comparatively new addition to the choir, the pressure washer (castrato, if I could get my hands on it).

All these devices may be convenient, but they cost money to run, and they incur the disdain of those of us who prefer to wash our cars with a bucket and sponge.

I have just invested a modest sum in a lawnmower which you push, and I look forward to shedding the pounds while my self-righteousness grows in inverse proportion. – Yours, etc,

PAUL GRIFFIN,
