Slightly sunnier uplands

Sir, – As one of your longest and oldest readers, now in my nineties, I tend to go to the Letters page first.

My choice for first prize goes to Ian d'Alton for his contribution headed "An unimaginable success" (January 5th).

He makes the point that “we now feel we might be basking in slightly sunnier uplands”, as I think we are, despite the current Covid problem. He correctly spells out the reason – getting away from “a deeply conservative clericalism that was never challenged”.

We now at last seem to have overcome that, and let’s keep up the good work.
