Nollaig na mBan

Sir, – There is an increasingly tiresome annual pattern of a Christian celebration, Nollaig na mBan (Little Christmas), being appropriated by feminists, who claim to represent all Irish women, to spread their left-wing political message.

Orla O'Connor of the National Women's Council (NWCI) invokes the holiday, and doesn't get beyond the second paragraph before launching an attack on the Catholic Church for its supposed "interference ... in our reproductive healthcare" ("On Nollaig na mBan it is time to demand action for women", Opinion & Analysis, January 6th). Does she not see any irony in this?

Ms O’Connor says that 2022 needs to be a year for women, but clearly the 600,000 women who practise the Catholic faith on a weekly basis don’t count in the eyes of the NWCI. Nor do the 360,000 women who voted to retain the Eighth Amendment, nor the approximately 6,000 female unborn children who had their lives ended by abortion in the last two years.

All women are equal, but it seems that some women are less equal than others.– Yours, etc,
