In days of old, knights were bold. And these days, they enjoy a good skirmish too.
On a dewy autumn morning recently, the clinking of armour and the clashing of steel swords (carefully blunted) filled the air in the grounds of the scenic and beautifully restored Claregalway Castle in Co Galway.
Ireland is home to a number of medieval armoured combat clubs, under the jurisdiction of Medieval Armoured Combat Ireland. Active clubs are dotted around the country, with groups in Athenry, Co Galway; Cork; Dublin; and Newtownards, Co Down.
Members train, compete and simply enjoy the camaraderie of being part of a community of like-minded individuals with an interest in medieval history.

Our pictures show the colour and spectacle, rigorously policed duels and fun that happen when armoured combat fans assemble and erect their tents at these open-air events.
Historically accurate axes and shields, jousting poles and pikes are assessed at a weapons check, before the fierce fighting commences. But it is all followed by hugs and backslapping as opposing competitors show each other respect.
For those who have hung up their swords and are no longer fond of battling, there are support roles to play. Medieval Armoured Combat Ireland welcomes newcomers to join this passionate group of people.
