A brilliant brace by Daryl Horgan against his former club helped Cork City to a surprise win over Sligo Rovers at Turner's Cross last night.
Horgan showed the champions what they were missing with two clinical finishes.
After 49 minutes the winger profited from a loose Joseph Ndo backpass intended for goalkeeper Gary Rogers to finish, and then, with Cork having taken over, he doubled the lead in the 74th minute with an excellent low shot from the left corner of the penalty area.
While the home side had the first chance, loan striker Ciarán Kilduff crossing for Daryl Kavanagh only for Gary Rogers to save, otherwise Sligo were far more assured on the ball.
David Cawley and Danny North both went close for them while Alan Keane was getting forward to good effect.
Once Cork hit the front they prospered. Horgan’s brace had them comfortable, and while debutant David McMillan pulled one back for Sligo on 82 minutes, Kilduff secured the points two minutes later.
