Ireland

Keiren Westwood — Virtually nothing to do other than field a tame Wayne Rooney free-kick. 6.

READ SOME MORE

John O’Shea (Capt.) — Enjoyed a comfortable afternoon in central defence with little threat coming his way. 6.

James McCarthy — Tidy in possession and diligent in support of his defenders. 6.

Jeff Hendrick — Quietly efficient wide on the right in the first half and then slotted into the middle of midfield as manager Martin O'Neill shuffled his pack. 5.

Glenn Whelan — Steady in central midfield on an afternoon when the tempo was such that he was never over-extended. 5.

Aiden McGeady — Started in lively fashion and kept full-back Phil Jones on his toes, but faded as time wore on. 5.

Robbie Brady — Did his job at left-back and produced many of the Republic's better moments from dead ball situations. 7.

Daryl Murphy — Combative, but passed up two excellent first-half opportunities to give Ireland the lead. 5.

David McGoldrick — Worked hard to press the England defence and combined well with club-mate Murphy. 6.

Substitutes

James McClean (on for McCarthy, 46 mins) — Gave Ireland fresh impetus and drifted a cross on to the roof of Joe Hart’s net. 6.

Shane Long (On for McGoldrick, 46 mins) — Put himself about as usual, but had little opportunity to threaten Hart's goal. 6.

Jon Walters (on for Murphy, 56 mins) — Tested Hart with a stinging right-foot shot as the Republic pushed for a winner. 6.

Shay Given (on for Westwood, 61 mins) — Largely untroubled behind a well-organised defence. 6.

Harry Arter (on for Whelan, 63 mins) — Caught the eye on debut with an enterprising run and shot shortly after his introduction. 6.

Paul McShane (on for O’Shea, 71 mins) — Made one important block after replacing O’Shea. 6.

England

Joe Hart — Did well to save from Jon Walters, but looked nervy when fumbling Robbie Brady's effort. 6.

Phil Jones — Coped okay in the unusual position of right-back, but offered nothing on the attack. 5.

Gary Cahill — Put in a good block early on, but did little else. 6.

Chris Smalling — A solid performance, albeit against weak opposition. 6.

Ryan Bertrand — Did nothing wrong on first start but did not set the game alight either. 6.

Jordan Henderson — Busy but failed to produce anything of note. 5.

Jack Wilshere — Poor afternoon. Offered nothing. 5.

James Milner— Slightly better than Wilshere, but only due to superior work-rate. 6.

Raheem Sterling — Poor afternoon. Every touch booed. Spooned a poor shot wide in the second half and hooked off after 65 minutes. 4.

Adam Lallana — Flashed a wicked shot wide, but passing was mostly poor. 5.

Wayne Rooney — Poor touch cost him a chance to open the scoring. Only shot on target was a weak free-kick. 5.

Substitutes

Andros Townsend (on for Sterling, 65mins) — England looked slightly more threatening following his introduction. Fired low shot on target. 6.

Ross Barkley (on for Wilshere, 65mins) — Spooned curling shot wide. Fell over a lot. 5.

Phil Jagielka (on for Cahill, 74mins) — Almost cost England the game with a late slip. 5.

Jamie Vardy (on for Rooney, 74mins) — Little impact on debut but had poor service. 5.

Theo Walcott (on for Lallana, 81mins) — England's most in-form player was left to wait for too long for his introduction. 5.
