The Republic of Ireland will return to the scene of two of their three defeats at last year’s European Championships after the FAI announced a friendly international against Poland in Poznan on November 19th.

Giovanni Trapattoni’s team lost to both Croatia and Italy at the Municipal Stadium in Poznan during the Euros, with a 4-0 hiding by Spain in Gdansk in between.

Next month's game will be the 25th meeting between the sides stretching back to 1938, with Ciaran Clark and Wes Hoolahan scoring the goals in a 2-0 win the last time the sides met at the Aviva Stadium in February of this year.

Poland have also failed to qualify for next year's World Cup in Brazil and sacked their coach Waldemar Fornalik on Wednesday following their 2-0 defeat to England in their final qualifier at Wembley, a result that earned qualification for Roy Hodgson's side.

The FAI confirmed that high performance director Ruud Dokter and former international Ray Houghton will report to the Board of Management on their progress in identifying potential candidates to replace Trapattoni as international manager in the run up to the Poland match.

That meeting will come early in November ahead of the announcement of a squad for the game in Poznan.

Under-21 manager Noel King took charge of the final two qualifiers against Germany and Kazakhstan on an interim basis and is likely to remain in place for the Poland game if no appointment is made beforehand.
