Chelsea have announced they have reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid over the transfer of the defender Filipe Luis for a fee understood to be around € 25 million.
The Brazil left-back has been earmarked as a long-term replacement for Ashley Cole, who joined Roma this week.
“Chelsea can confirm an agreement has been reached with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of Filipe Luis,” read a statement on the club’s website. “The move is subject to the 28-year-old agreeing personal terms.
A statement on Atletico’s website said: “Atletico Madrid and Chelsea have reached an agreement to transfer the rights of Filipe Luis, pending a medical with the English club. The Brazilian player had told our club at the end of the campaign his willingness to join the London side.”
Filipe Luis joined Atletico from Deportivo de La Coruna in 2010 and played 180 matches. He helped them win La Liga last season and played in their defeat to rivals Real Madrid in last season's Champions League final.
