Men's Hockey Leinster Senior League: Justin Sherriff took up his place on the Pembroke side last week against YMCA for the first time since playing for a year in Belgium and a summer with the Irish team.
While his two goals (one penalty and one from play) were a comforting reminder of where he finished off two seasons ago, new coach Rudi Wortman will be hoping the overall score (2-2) is not a shape of the things to come, despite the result coming against a sprightly YMCA side, which has made a strong start to the year.
Scottish international Paddy Conlon will be back this weekend to add strength to the Pembroke midfield as they face Railway Union at Serpentine Avenue.
YMCA, who travel to Whitechurch Park, face a difficult match against Corinthians. Ger Butler has done a good job with the visitors, who are well organised and play with a decent shape to the team.
Andrew Walker is also turning into a player who needs to be man managed for the entire match. A late goal against Rovers and Railway, as well as a strike last week, is a good return from three games.
Corinthians, with their dangerous attack, will look to that for confidence but this weekend they face a side with a quick front line and one that is probably fitter and more developed than last year.
Three Rock Rovers, off to a surprisingly slow start to the season, will hope to rebound from their 2-1 defeat to Monkstown last week and get moving up the table. But in Glenanne they face a difficult platform on which to turn things around.
Meanwhile, the first match between Munster and Ulster in the Senior Interprovincial tournament scheduled for Saturday, October 18th, has been officially postponed. A decision on the November series of matches will be discussed at the Irish Hockey Association Council meeting on October 18th and a statement will be issued thereafter.
