As the news broke that Paul O'Connell would not play any further part in Ireland's Rugby World Cup campaign, Twitter started to buzz with tributes.

O’Connell suffered a torn hamstring in Ireland’s bruising 24-9 victory over France on Sunday, which set the side up for a quarter final against Argentina.

The injury brings the decorated lock’s career with Ireland to an abrupt end, and Twitter responded accordingly, with #ThanksPaulie quickly trending.

Mike McCarthy has been named as O’Connell’s replacement. Peter O’Mahony was also ruled out after suffering knee ligament damage and Leinster’s Rhys Ruddock has also been called into the squad.
