Biggs’ Checkmate V takes Division 2 title in ICRA National Championships

Light airs and dead calms at times on Dublin Bay yesterday challenged the 115-boat fleet in the Teng Tools ICRA National Championships hosted by the Royal Irish Yacht Club.

Nevertheless, there were several consistent performances, with Nigel Biggs' Checkmate V taking two wins for the day in Division 2.

Another former champion, Jonathan Skerritt, saw his quarter-tonner Quest top the 20-strong Class 2 with a second place and a win to upset the form book. Another shock came from George and Neil Kenefick on the Nathan Kirwan Trust entry in race two.

Having won the opening race of the series, the Royal Cork YC team missed a course amendment shortly before the next race and placed sixth.

In Class One, a highly anticipated showdown between Paul O’Higgins Rockabill V and Philip Byrne’s Bonne Exemple failed to materialise as the two Royal Irish YC boats ended fourth and 10th overall for the day.

Clubmate John Maybury's J109 Joker II leads the 26-boat class after a win and a second for a seven-point lead going into today's three race programme.
