Carlow IT have been ejected from this week's quarter-finals of the Fitzgibbon Cup after fielding an ineligible player in the round-robin win over Limerick-based Mary Immaculate College last Tuesday.

The Carlow college progressed to the quarter-finals on the back of that win, but an objection was later lodged by Mary Immaculate over the eligible of Carlow corner back James Gannon, who it turns out is only studying a part-time graduate course, and is therefore ineligible under third level rules.

It means the Carlow team, managed by Kilkenny legend DJ Carey, were forced to forfeit that result, with Mary Immaculate now taking their quarter-final place instead, and will face DIT on Thursday.

This week's revised quarter-final line up is: Wednesday – Cork IT v NUI Galway, Cork IT, 2.0; UL v UCD, UL, 3.0 Thursday – Limerick IT v Waterford IT, Limerick IT, 3pm; Mary Immaculate College v Dublin IT, MICL Grounds, Limerick, 3pm
