Day six: Irish in action

James McCarthy

James McCarthy

Athletics (Shot Put)

Olympic Stadium, 10.00am

Returning to the Paralympics after a 16-year absence, the 40-year-old Limerick man is likely to struggle here. A former world junior champion in the javelin, his personal best is a good two metres short of what will likely be needed to make the final.

Orla Barry

Athletics (Discus)

Olympic Stadium, 7.00pm

On her best form, she should definitely be there or thereabouts this evening. Finished fifth in Beijing and took gold at the IPC European Championships earlier this year. Ought to make the final without too much fuss, will probably need a personal best to medal.

Helen Kearney

Equestrian (Individual Freestyle)

Greenwich Park, 4.00pm

Her silver medal on Sunday took everyone by surprise but given the outstanding games the equestrian team is having, anything seems possible now. It was her performance that sealed the team bronze, nailing Ireland’s first two equestrian medals ever at the Paralympics.

Geraldine Savage

Equestrian (Individual Freestyle)

Greenwich Park, 4.00pm

Her seventh place finish in the individual championship event on Sunday exceeded expectations at her first ever Paralympics. After her team-mate Eilish Byrne’s dramatic fourth place yesterday, the whole equestrian team is on a high.

James Dwyer

Equestrian (Individual Freestyle)

Greenwich Park, 9.00am

Came sixth in the championship event on Sunday on his horse Orlando and could barely contain his delight when he found out there was a team bronze medal coming on the back of it. Has it in him to go close to the podium here.

John Twomey, Anthony Hegarty, Ian Costelloe

Sailing (Sonar)

Weymouth, 11.00am

Still struggling to get anything going, with yesterday’s two races bringing a couple of 10th places, leaving them in, as it happens, 10th place overall. Races seven and eight take place today, with time running out for them to improve their placing.

Seán Baldwin

Shooting (50m Air Rifle Prone)

Royal Artillery Barracks, 9.00am

Warned before the games that the standard would be very high and just hasn’t been able to get close to it. Finished in the bottom two in both 10m events and needs a big improvement to avoid a repeat here.

Darragh McDonald

Swimming (50m freestyle)

Aquatic Centre, 9.48am

Set Super Saturday on its way with his gold in the 400m freestyle. Faces some of the same opponents here but the distance is probably too short to expect a repeat. Strong enough to make the final but since he’s better built for stamina than for speed, that’s probably as much as he can hope for.
