Over the last six years our technicians have been working across Ireland to install more than two million smart meters in homes, farms and businesses.
If you’re one of the more than two million electricity users who already have a smart meter in their home, you’re on your way to becoming a much more energy efficient and sustainable household.
But simply having a smart meter is not enough. To really make a difference in how you use and manage electricity in the home, you can sign up for an ESB Networks Online Account.
That’s because the information on your ESB Networks Online Account can help you choose the best tariffs for your home.

Having your actual consumption data means you can use it on price comparison websites making it easier for them to accurately advise you on which is the best tariff for you.
It also allows you to access your individual usage data, information that lets you know exactly how you are using energy, and where you’re most likely to make savings.
Signing up couldn’t be easier and, what’s more, doing so will help support delivery of Ireland’s climate targets.
Now, with the introduction of this data driven technology, ESB Networks Online Account allows customers to make better informed choices about how they use their energy, reducing their costs.
So what is an ESB Networks Online Account?
Your ESB Networks Online Account gives you direct access to your energy use data, providing you with insights into how you are using electricity in your home. You can even see the times of day you use it most.
The information on your ESB Networks Online Account can help you choose the best tariffs for your home, regardless of who your electricity supplier is.
It also facilitates the growing number of people who are participating in the microgeneration scheme. Currently more than 140,000 customers who generate their own electricity, such as from solar panels, are receiving payments for any excess energy sold back to the grid.

Why smart metering is a smart move
ESB Networks’ meter replacement programme began in 2019. In rolling it out nationwide, it works in co-operation with the Commission for Regulation of Utilities, the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, and all electricity supply companies.
The more than two million smart meters now installed in homes, farms, and businesses across Ireland are all helping to transform how electricity is measured and managed.
They are key to the delivery of a digitally enabled electricity network which, in turn, can accommodate ever higher levels of renewable energy, as well as supporting the electrification of transport and heating.
“We are really proud of the progress of the National Smart Metering Programme and reaching the milestone of more than two million smart meters installed,” says Nicholas Tarrant, managing director, ESB Networks.
“With a smart meter, customers can take more control of their electricity usage, and we are increasingly seeing this happen thanks to the roll-out of the programme. This positive change is a vital component of our Networks for Net Zero Strategy at ESB Networks, that is enabling a smarter, low carbon electricity network which will ultimately benefit all customers and help support the delivery of national climate targets.
“Right now, more than four in five households across the country have smart meters with the programme and the roll-out is still continuing at pace.”
