Transition year – timing is everything

Sir, – Further to recent correspondence on the merits of transition year (October 16th), an important factor is the age of the student.

As someone who was already set to turn 18 at the very start of sixth year, I had dismissed any notion of transition year right off the bat, as I found it sufficiently undignified spending the best part of a year as a legal adult in an institution that largely caters to minors and often insists on continuing to treat their adult students as such.

Had I been two years younger, and faced the prospect of being under 18 for my first year of college, with all the legal and social constraints that would entail, I would have certainly considered the extra school year. – Yours, etc,

TIMOTHY
