Technology and climate change

Sir, – Most of our population will by now be aware of the global challenge of climate change and the necessity for all countries, particularly in the developed world, to lower our CO2 emissions. Many will have heard that Ireland is not doing enough to lower its emissions and that there will be a large price to pay in fines. Some will realise that Ireland’s present energy policy is not achieving its objectives as emissions are rising rather than falling. A few energy professionals will realise that the commitment to achieve all our targets with “renewable energy” cannot succeed. They realise that there are “sustainable energy” options coming on stream in several countries that can succeed. These are small modular nuclear reactors and carbon capture and storage.

If we are the democratic country our Government claims we are, surely professionals in any sector, private of semi-State, should be encouraged to speak publicly about all existing and developing energy options? – Yours, etc,

ANNE BAILY,

Carrick-on-Suir,
