School divestment and patron bodies

Sir, – Seán Ó Diomasaigh refers to Education Equality as a "patron body" (Letters, March 15th). In the interests of clarity, Education Equality is a parent-led human rights advocacy group. We neither hold nor seek the patronage of any school, nor do we campaign on behalf of any patron.

Mr Ó Diomasaigh nevertheless raises valid questions about the utility of the patronage model itself.

It is incumbent upon the Government to address these head-on as it considers the terms of reference for next year’s citizens’ assembly on the future of education.

He is correct to argue that the idea of “parental choice” is flawed. Our suggestion that we simply remove religious indoctrination from the State curriculum should not be interpreted as support for the existing patronage-based system. We take this approach because our reforms can be implemented quickly at little cost to the taxpayer.

While laudable, his proposal to “re-nationalise” our schools could cost billions and take many years to achieve. We are campaigning for today’s children, not just tomorrow’s.
