“It calls to mind the old adage of asset rich, but income poor”

Sir, – John FitzGerald argues in today’s Irish Times “If we want fairer wealth distribution, we need to tax property properly,” (September 8th).

Many people have seen their houses soar in value, while their income has risen only moderately.

Thus Dr FitzGerald argues that house owners should pay an increased annual tax out of income related to the value of their house asset.

It calls mind the old mantra of “asset rich, but income poor”.

In addition, Dublin City Council voted to suspend their 15 per cent discount on Local Property Tax (LPT) which is due to be uprated to take account of increased property values, later this year.

As it is property owners will pay a lot more tax in the years to come. – Yours, etc,
