Sir, – As I retire from my role as a school principal, I do so with pride in what has been achieved but also with deep concern. The true backbone of every school – its secretaries and caretakers – remain undervalued.
Secretaries carry the weight of admissions, payroll, tenders, files, and service providers, while also welcoming families, managing crises and keeping the school steady. Caretakers fix, move, set up, repair and quietly create the sense of belonging that turns a building into a community.
Principals and deputy principals face massive workloads that are supported by this wonderful team. I lost count over the years of the number of times people from this team have stepped in and resolved an issue. Leaving their pay and conditions unresolved only harms students, staff, and the progress of education.
We have just received the keys to the final part of our new building – an achievement eight years in the making. It would not have been possible without the commitment of these staff, who continue to serve despite poor pay and no pensions. Their loyalty is extraordinary; that it is taken for granted is unacceptable.

As students return this autumn, secretaries and caretakers are the first people they meet, ensuring welcome and stability. Their value is beyond measure. It is time the system finally recognised it.
Yours, etc.
