At least eight people were injured on Sunday night when two masked men opened fire outside a mosque in the French city of Avignon in the southeast of the country.

Two men armed with a rifle and a handgun arrived at the scene in a Renault Clio before they began shooting at a group of people leaving the Avignon mosque at 10.30pm local time, according to French website La Provence.

At least four people were injured in the crowd outside the mosque while a family of four in a nearby apartment were also reportedly injured when they were hit by shrapnel.
