SMALL PRINT:GOOD NEWS FOR shark film fans: Bret Easton Ellis has teamed up with the writer of Taxi Driver, Paul Schrader, to work on a new project called Bait. The film will centre around a disgruntled employee at an exclusive beach club, who directs a yacht into shark-infested waters in order to do away with his intolerable clients. Dozens of writers and directors have tried to outdo Jawsin the great shark film stakes, but all have failed. Do Schrader and Ellis have what it takes? Let's take a look at what they're up against:
GOOD SHARK
Jaws , Steven Spielberg, 1975
The ultimate shark movie, which continues to define the genre and inspire fear about everything concerning fish with teeth.
Deep Blue Sea , Renny Harlin, 1999
Ridiculous but hugely fun popcorn movie starring LL Cool J, Samuel L Jackson (who gets eaten in an excellent fashion) and Saffron Burrows about sharks with super-brains who get trapped in a flooded research centre.
Open Water,Chris Kentis, 2003
Great tension-filled movie based on a true story of two scuba divers who were accidentally left at sea in the Caribbean by their tour boat.
Sharkwater,Rob Stewart, 2006
Stunning documentary filmed around Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands that switches the perception of sharks from hunters to hunted.
BAD SHARK
Malibu Shark Attack, David Lister, 2009 Awful film involving a tsunami in California, and an underwater earthquake that unleashes a pack of 'goblin shark' who are hell-bent on killing a group of stranded lifeguards.
Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus,Jack Perez, 2009
As ludicrous as the title suggests, especially when the shark attacks an airplane. In the sky.
Megalodon , Pat Corbitt, 2002
An ocean underneath an ocean becomes disturbed during an oil-drilling exercise and out comes a prehistoric sixty-foot megalodon shark that basically eats everything.
