An aggressive approach is needed to address Ireland's environmental sustainability, the Progressive Democrats said today.

At the launch of the party's manifesto on the environment, Little Green Book, party leader Tánaiste Michael McDowell said that a similar "aggressive approach" that the PDs adopted to create employment must be taken to addressing Ireland's environmental sustainability.

Party environment spokeswoman Fiona O'Malley also said that a successful economy was necessary to finance environmentally friendly policies.

She warned that any weakening the country's economy would hinder the battle to preserve the environment.
