A 28-year-old man was yesterday remanded in custody after he was charged with the murder of a 45-year-old father of five who died from stab wounds after he was attacked while in bed at home in Co Tipperary.

Alex Freiberg, from Bridgewater House, Clonmel, was brought before a special sitting of Clonmel District Court yesterday afternoon, where he was charged with the murder of Kieran Cambridge at 69, Carrigeen Close, Clonmel, on September 16th.

Sgt Michael Hennebry gave evidence of arresting, charging and cautioning Mr Freiberg with the offence. Mr Freiberg made no reply when the charge was put to him after caution, Sgt Hennebry told the court.

Mr Freiberg's solicitor, Peter Reilly, said he had no questions for Sgt Hennebry and Insp Kevin Bowen applied to have Mr Freiberg remanded in custody to appear again at Carrick-on-Suir District Court on Thursday.

Mr Reilly asked Judge Terence Finn to make an order that Mr Freiberg would receive appropriate medical attention while in custody, and he also asked that a psychiatric report on his client be prepared as he believed it would be helpful to the court.

Judge Finn agreed to both applications and ordered that Mr Freiberg receive appropriate medical attention, while he also ordered that a psychiatric report be prepared. He remanded him in custody to appear at Carrick-on-Suir District Court on Thursday.

Mr Reilly also applied for free legal aid for his client, whom the court heard is in receipt of disability benefit. Judge Finn requested a statement of means from Mr Freiberg in support of his application for free legal aid.

The deceased, Kieran Cambridge, was a native of Dillon's Cross on Cork's northside. He had live in Clonmel for around six months.
