Keane delays announcing decision on contract offer

Will he? Won't he?

Manchester United fans are holding their breath, and the ABUs (Anyone But United) are keeping their fingers crossed as speculation on whether Roy Keane (28) leaves Old Trafford reaches fever pitch.

The Corkman was to give an answer yesterday to the club's latest contract offer, reported to be £32,000 a week over five years and a £2 million testimonial bonus.

However, according to his lawyer, Mr Michael Kennedy, Keane wants more time to decide. An announcement on the deal, which was due to be made after today's match with Leeds United, now looks unlikely.

"Roy Keane is considering his position and will make a decision in the next day or two," said Mr Kennedy.

The speculation about an end to Keane's career at Old Trafford was fuelled by reports that Italian giants Juventus would be willing to pay £80,000 a week for him in a transfer deal for Edgar Davids, a player long admired by united manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Gazzetta dello Sport quoted the Turin club's general manager, Mr Luciano Moggi, as saying he had spoken to Mr Kennedy about a possible transfer either now or next June, when the player's contract with United expires.

Keane has been holding out for £40,000 a week in the knowledge that any foreign player replacing him would demand even greater wages.

Meanwhile, Denis Irwin, the Manchester United vice-captain and Republic of Ireland team-mate, said Keane's departure would be a major blow to the club but the player must put his interests first. "It would be a terrible loss if he did go, but hopefully he will stay."
