A 75-year-old grandmother has died after being struck by a council bin lorry while she was walking along a road in Belfast on her way to buy a newspaper.
Police have named the victim, who had been in a critical condition in hospital since the incident on Thursday but who died on Saturday as a result of her injuries, as Eileen Harding.
She was walking on the Upper Newtownards Road, at the junction with Grampian Avenue, in the east of the city at around 9.15 am when the collision occurred.
It is reported the married mother of four children, grandmother of 10 and great-grandmother of three was on her way to collect her newspapers as she did every morning.
On Thursday, a Belfast City Council spokesperson confirmed one of its vehicles was involved in the collision and that it would be fully cooperating with police in their enquiries.
Police Service of Northern Ireland detective sergeant Harrison said as part of those enquiries, detectives would like to speak with two women who came to the assistance of Ms Harding “who could help with our investigation.”
