A woman was seriously injured when a firework hit her in the face shortly shortly after midnight on Friday in Galway city centre.
She was sitting at a bus stop near the taxi rank at the top of Eyre Square when the incident occurred. Gardaí said they understand that the firework was launched from close to the Tourist Information Kiosk on Eyre Square, which is situated across the street from where the woman was sitting.
The woman suffered a serious injury and was taken from the scene to hospital in an ambulance, gardaí said.
It is understood that there was a large group of people in Eyre Square at the time, and gardaí are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to make contact with them.

Gardaí added that the possession of fireworks without a licence is illegal and that their unauthorised use is dangerous. Anyone who has information about the possession of illegal fireworks is asked to make contact with their local Garda station or the confidential line.
