Woman dies, daughter (8) seriously injured in Kerry crash

Single vehicle crash near Killarney

A woman in her late forties has died and her eight-year-old daughter has been seriously injured in a road crash in Killarney, Co Kerry.

The single vehicle accident occurred shortly after noon today as the car, a Ford Fiesta, was nearing the outskirts of Killarney at Ballydowney on the main Ring of Kerry road.

The woman had been travelling from the direction of Killorglin when the car left the road. Weather conditions at the time were described as poor, but it is not known if this contributed to the crash.

Fire and other emergency services were called to the scene. The child, a passenger in the car, was taken to Kerry General Hospital and her condition was initially thought to be serious.

The road, the N72, was closed and traffic diverted via Aghadoe.

The woman who is living in the Killorglin area was pronounced dead at the scene.
